  Dietary Changes and Health CareiNR非凡网

As is shown in the graph, China's food distribution has taken greatiNR非凡网

changes from 1960's to 1990's According to this statistics of cereals,iNR非凡网

vegetable, meat, and fruits, the number of those who eat rice, flour oriNR非凡网

vegetable has greatly decreased in the past four decades.iNR非凡网

  In contrast of thisiNR非凡网

the number of those who eat oil or meat has sharply increased.iNR非凡网

  From suchiNR非凡网

dietary changes, we can perceive the rapid improvement of our people' s livingiNR非凡网

  standard.iNR非凡网

Why does this improvement occur? The direct reason is the fact that theiNR非凡网

Chinese people have attached much importance to their health care.iNR非凡网

Nationally, China's economic growth is booming, and more people are gettingiNR非凡网

  richer.iNR非凡网

Individually, everyone's consumption of food is increasingly varied.iNR非凡网

  IniNR非凡网

particular, most of people are reluctant to eat much vegetable, but much meat and oil in their diets.iNR非凡网

In my view, the changes of China's dietary distribution seem to be bothiNR非凡网

  positive and negative.iNR非凡网

The positive aspect is that China' s economical growthiNR非凡网

has given rise to the higher level of dietary standard, with most of people livingiNR非凡网

  rich and happy.iNR非凡网

But the negative aspect is that, I'm afraid, less eatingiNR非凡网

vegetable will lead to poorer health, such as lacking vitamin nutrients in one'siNR非凡网

  body.iNR非凡网

Therefore, we think it necessary for the Chinese to be aware of theiNR非凡网

balanced diets: Lots of vegetable and meat, which may gain us healthieriNR非凡网

Chinese table manners of families have no intrinsic quality even there are different region and position.iNR非凡网

No matter three meals a day or guest’s arrival, always bowls with chopsticks, food with soup.iNR非凡网

There is no rule for how to put the tableware.iNR非凡网

What people care about more are not the gorgeous tableware but the sumptuous food.iNR非凡网

People’s dining position reflects the most obvious etiquette of Chinese table manners.iNR非凡网

In ancient society, men are supreme, and women are not allowed to sit with men on the same table.iNR非凡网

Although this is modern society, this kind of ancient etiquette still remains.iNR非凡网

Today in China, the phenomenon that men sit on the table before women can be found everywhere.iNR非凡网

The master of a family usually sits on the first-class seat.iNR非凡网

The first-class seat is usually near the interior of a room facing to the door.iNR非凡网

Once there is a guest, the master will offer the first-class seat to the guest politely.iNR非凡网

If it is an ordinary meal of family, families should start after the elder.iNR非凡网

If there is a guest, the master offer the food to the guest is essential from the beginning to the end.iNR非凡网

And the tradition of urging others to drink is also a special phenomenon.iNR非凡网

  Table MannersiNR非凡网

The main difference between Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares.iNR非凡网

If you are being treated by a Chinese host, be prepared for a ton of food.iNR非凡网

Chinese are very proud of their culture of cuisine and will do their best to show their hospitality.iNR非凡网

And sometimes the Chinese host use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate.iNR非凡网

This is a sign of politeness.iNR非凡网

The appropriate thing to do would be to eat the whatever-it-is and say how yummy it is.iNR非凡网

If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite thank you and leave the food there.iNR非凡网

  Eating No-no'siNR非凡网

Don't stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl.iNR非凡网

  Instead,lay them on your dish.iNR非凡网

The reason for this is that when somebody dies, the shrine to them contains a bowl of sand or rice with two sticks of incense stuck upright in it.iNR非凡网

So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like this shrine and is equivalent to wishing death upon a person at the table!iNR非凡网

Make sure the spout of the teapot is not facing anyone.iNR非凡网

It is impolite to set the teapot down where the spout is facing towards somebody.iNR非凡网

The spout should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.iNR非凡网

Don't tap on your bowl with your chopsticks.iNR非凡网

Beggars tap on their bowls, so this is not polite.iNR非凡网

Also, when the food is coming too slow in a restarant, people will tap their bowls.iNR非凡网

If you are in someone's home,it is like insulting the cook.iNR非凡网

  DrinkingiNR非凡网

Gan Bei! (Cheers! “Gan Bei” literally means “dry [the] glass”) Besides beer, the official Chinese alcoholic beverage is Bai Jiu,high-proof Chinese liquor made fromassorted grains.iNR非凡网

There are varying degrees of Bai Jiu.iNR非凡网

The Beijing favorite is called Er Guo Tou, which is a whopping 56% alcohol.iNR非凡网

More expensive are Maotai and Wuliangye.iNR非凡网

Of course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that’s only superficial.iNR非凡网

Besides, in decent restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough.iNR非凡网

The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares.iNR非凡网

If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you’re in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.iNR非凡网

The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes.iNR非凡网

Soup then will be served (unless in Guangdong style restaurants) to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings.iNR非凡网

If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.iNR非凡网

Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests.iNR非凡网

In formal dinners, there are always “public” chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks.iNR非凡网

This is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness.iNR非凡网

It is always polite to eat the food.iNR非凡网

If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate.iNR非凡网

People in China tend to over - order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed.iNR非凡网

When you have had enough, just say so.iNR非凡网

  Or you will always overeat!iNR非凡网

Difference of table etiquette between eastern and western culturesiNR非凡网

There are differences and similarities between the etiquette at table between the eastern and western cultures.iNR非凡网

To raise a few examples, we could talk about the differences of both cultures.iNR非凡网

Westerners would use silverware such as forks, knives and soup spoons, which are made of stainless steel.iNR非凡网

Easterners would use chopsticks and soup spoons.iNR非凡网

In certain part of Southern Asia, people eat with their hands.iNR非凡网

Dinner table and table seating arrangements are different between the two customs.iNR非凡网

The dinner table for the west is mostly rectangle while the east is round.iNR非凡网

In addition, there are differences in the ways foods are served between the two cultures, the westerners serve dinner by courses and one course, or plate, is served after another.iNR非凡网

Each person has his own choice or portion of his foods served separately.iNR非凡网

However, the eastern culture, or the Chinese culture, has the foods served very much at the same time and they are not served separately to each individually.iNR非凡网

Therefore, in a Chinese meal, the foods are shared among the people at the table.iNR非凡网

It is considered bad manner for a person to use his chopsticks turning foods in a plate upside down to pick what he likes.iNR非凡网

As for the similarities, both cultures would consider impolite for a person to put his elbows on the table or to talk with foods in his mouth.iNR非凡网
